Docents have the best fish tales in town. Docents are stationed throughout the Aquarium galleries to share information about the habitats, animals and plants. As a docent, you will be equipped with interesting and fun facts that will impress any visitor. Docent shifts are available every day of the week from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. or from 1:30 to 6 p.m.

Eight Tuesday evening training sessions beginning on:
   September 15, 2009
   6:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.

The Volunteer in Progress (VIP) is an "interim" position for volunteers who want to attend the annual docent training program, but want to begin volunteering immediately. The VIP program is not a pre-requisite for becoming a docent, but merely a way for prospective docents to become immediately involved with volunteering until the docent training class begins each fall. VIP's are training primarily on Discovery Hall, the turtle station and the seahorse gallery.

   Docent volunteers should:

  • Be enthusiastic and cheerful
  • Have good oral communication skills
  • Have an interest in working with the public, animals, plants, habitats or the environment
  • Be available to work one 4½ hour shift every week or every other week
  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Attend a general volunteer orientation meeting
  • Complete an eight week Tuesday night training course from 6:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.
  • Complete an AquaAssement at the conclusion of the training course
   Shifts:

  • Two 4½ hour shifts are available each day, from 9:30 AM -2 p.m. or 1:30 - 6 p.m. seven days a week
  • We especially need weekend volunteers!
