RiverRocks  ~  River Gorge Explorer

“Part thrill ride, part scenic tour.” – Rob Lovitt, MSNBC

River Gorge ExplorerOctober is the perfect time to take a cruise into Tennessee’s Grand Canyon aboard this high-speed catamaran.  The River Gorge Explorer skims the water at speeds up to 50 mph to transport passengers from downtown Chattanooga into “Tennessee’s Grand Canyon”, the Tennessee River Gorge. This United Nations Biosphere Reserve contains more bio-diversity than any other temperate zone in the world. The Autumn colors are spectacular, cascading from the mountain tops to the water’s edge along the length of the 26 mile Gorge. Each 2-hour adventure is led by an Aquarium naturalist who points out wildlife and historic points of interest along the way.  Passengers aboard the River Gorge Explorer enjoy the view from oversized windows during high-speed portions of each excursion and a topside observation deck while cruising in the heart of the Gorge. 3-hour cocktail sunset cruises also available. <Watch video>

The Tennessee Aquarium has been helping the Tennessee River Gorge Trust preserve land in the Gorge for more than a decade. Money collected from the coin drop in the Aquarium’s River Journey building has added up to more than $270,000 since the coin drop was installed on Earth Day in 1996. “We are pleased to help the Tennessee River Gorge Trust protect vital habitat in Chattanooga’s backyard,” said Charlie Arant, Tennessee Aquarium president and CEO. “The River Gorge Explorer gives our visitors an excellent opportunity to explore and learn about this scenic treasure.”

While the Aquarium continues helping to spare important habitat in the Gorge from change, new support generated by RiverRocks festival proceeds will also be beneficial. Olympic Gold Medalist Joe Jacobi explains how outdoor recreation can lead to conservation. <Watch video>  Meet Joe Jacobi and other outdoor experts at the Tennessee Aquarium during RiverRocks.
