SACS/CITA Accreditation

The Tennessee Aquarium is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the by Commission on International and Trans-regional Accreditation as a Supplementary Education School. The Aquarium underwent the same rigorous accreditation process that elementary schools and universities participate in to be accredited in their areas of expertise. We are the only aquarium in the country to receive this distinction.

As a leader in science education, Aquarium staff members felt it was imperative to become accredited to highlight our emphasis on education. The Aquarium is more than just a field trip. The educational experiences gained from a visit to the Aquarium cannot be duplicated outside of our facility. The exhibits, free standards-based educational programs and pre- & post-materials make it a true field study destination – an important supplemental component to any education program.
