The Facts
Tennessee Aquarium IMAX® 3D Theater

"The result of the 3-D wizardry . . . immerses you in the most realistic experience of depth ever achieved by motion pictures."

-Jack Mathews, New York Newsday

The project:
Tennessee Aquarium IMAX® 3D Theater

Located in the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Center, the massive six-story-high screen is 66' x 89' and seats 400 people. The IMAX building also houses the Environmental Learning Lab; Great Hall with "whale bone" design and back-lit graphic panels; gift shop; boardroom; and office space for Aquarium personnel. The IMAX® 3D Theater was built to augment the enormous success of the Aquarium, which opened in May 1992.

Description:
The IMAX 3D experience is powerful, involving and intense. Because of its technologically advanced 3D cameras, rolling-loop projector, special polarized glasses, and large film format - at 10 times the size of conventional 35mm movie film, it's the largest in the world- viewers don't watch an IMAX 3D movie; they live it.

Location:
Chattanooga, Tennessee

The Tennessee Aquarium IMAX® 3D Theater is located at the corner of Second and Chestnut streets, halfway between the Aquarium and the Creative Discovery Museum and across the street from Shuttle Park North, a new cinema complex and electric shuttle terminal.

Both the Aquarium and the city of Chattanooga have become models of environmental sustainability and urban renewal. The Aquarium and the IMAX Theater have played a major role in the city's rebirth and bolstered the transformation of the downtown riverfront.

Project cost:
$14 million, including the Environmental Learning Lab

Owner/operator:
Tennessee Aquarium Corporation

The Tennessee Aquarium is the first and largest freshwater aquarium in the world. The 130,000-square-foot facility holds 400,000 gallons of water and 9,000 animals that swim, fly and crawl in natural exhibits.
