Tennessee Aquarium Team
Shines with Youth Volunteers

CHATTANOOGA, TN (August 31, 1998) -- As the leaves begin to turn, high school band music fills the crisp autumn air, and students get back in the swing of things, area youth are discovering their place on one of the city's most unique teams. And, veteran members of the Tennessee Aquarium youth volunteer team are on a winning streak, recruiting the city's most spirited students.

Youngsters with career ambitions in science, service and stewardship are finding their niche and investing their talents in the Tennessee Aquarium. Aspiring young leaders are learning the ins and outs of the world's largest freshwater aquarium, and making their mark on one of Chattanooga's finest education institutions.

By pointing out camouflaged animals or plants in Aquarium exhibits, telling guests the little known facts about more than 9,000 animals and sharing information about the environment, these spirited youth volunteers impart a sense of awe about the wonders of nature.

"The enthusiasm and hospitality of our youth volunteers makes a lasting impression on our visitors," said Julie Piper, volunteer coordinator. "And, their ability to excite people of all ages about the environment and our role in preserving it is an inspiration to everyone they meet."

Youth volunteers complete a four-session training course about the Aquarium's animals and exhibits. Students must be in high school, have one year of general biology, and be able to commit to one four and one-half hour shift every other week.

Students interested in joining the Tennessee Aquarium volunteer team should call 785-3057. A student/parent orientation will take place Thursday, October 1 in the Aquarium's Discovery Classroom at 6 p.m
